Visit Tenerife’s best golf courses

Tenerife has a growing reputation for its golf courses, so if you’re into the sport it’s a particularly good destination to choose for a holiday. There are nine courses to pick from altogether and, since the island has good weather all year long, it’s pleasant to play no matter when you choose to travel.

Golf del Sur

As with many of the most popular beaches, a number of the top golf courses can be found in the south of the island. Having hosted several professional tournaments, Golf del Sur is one of these.

Now, while scenery is by no means the be-all and end-all of a course, it’s always nice to play somewhere fairly picturesque when you’re overseas. In Tenerife, it’s not hard to find a scenic fairway, but Golf del Sur really excels, since it’s surrounded by protected natural areas. Plus, you can get some great views of the towering Mount Teide while you’re here!

A 27-hole course, it’s got its fair share of challenging shots, so it’s a good choice if you fancy testing your skills or really honing your game. Look out for holes 2, 3 and 4 in particular.

Los Palos Centro de Golf

Also situated in the south, this is a short 9-hole course that’s perfect if you want to squeeze in a quick game without losing half – or all! – your day! That said, you’ll be on holiday, so time probably won’t be that much of an issue, but it’s still well worth a visit.

If you’ve only recently starting playing golf, this course is a particularly good choice because it’s fairly flat. That doesn’t mean it’s easy though; in fact, there are quite a few obstacles, including several that are water-based, which are tricky to negotiate and should challenge even experienced players. There’s also a putting green, driving range and chipping area to practice on.

Golf Costa Adeje

Located in – yes, you’ve guessed it – the south of the island, Golf Costa Adeje is one of the best courses to try if you want to play with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Actually, it also has some pretty impressive vistas over the Adeje Mountains, so it’s an all-round scenic option!

The main obstacles on this 27-hole course include gorges and lakes, so it’s a good place to push your skills.

Real Club de Golf de Tenerife

If you want a taste of Spain’s golfing heritage, the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife is the course for you, since it’s the nation’s second oldest golf club. Located around 600 m above sea level, it’s famous for its impressive views of Mount Teide and the marvellous old trees dotted all around (these also provide some pretty decent shade, which might come as a relief if you’re somewhat quick to catch the sun!).

Comprising 18 holes, it’s a notoriously complicated course liberally sprinkled with obstacles. Plus, there’s a sizeable 300 m level difference, so it’s worth either getting an electric caddy or preparing yourself for some pretty challenging legwork when heading from one hole to the next.

Buenavista Golf

An 18-hole course, Buenavista Golf is perched on a cliff-top in the north of the island. What’s nice about coming here is that the course really makes use of its position, with the 15th and 17th holes close to the edge of said cliff. Safe to say, each of these requires a high level of accuracy. Cliffs aside, it has tremendous ocean views, while it is also situated next to Teno Country Park.
