Renting a holiday villa in France

France is especially popular with a type of self-catering holiday in which parties rent a holiday home for the duration of their overseas stay. In most cases the property will take the form of a holiday villa that includes a private pool. France’s popularity originates from its proximity to the UK, making it possible to focus on the actual holiday rather than on commuting and getting there. If you are considering renting a holiday villa in France here are a number of tips that are worth following.

Legal documentation – In the vast number of cases, you will not require any further legal documentation beyond your valid UK passport. However, if your party includes an individual that resides outside the UK, further checks are needed.

Driving while in France – Driving in France requires particular concentration as driving in done on the ‘right’ hand side of the road. If you are considering hiring a car or even taking your family car across ensure to bring your driving license and make a mental note to stay on the right hand lane.  Some drivers will even place a reminder inside the cabin (on the steering wheel for example) to be reminded about which side to drive on. Finally ensure to drive within the permitted speed limits. Fines are expensive and you will be required to settle your fine prior to continuing on your journey.

Included in the property – Often villas in France will include renting the property for the duration of the stay, linen, bedclothes, small towels, utilities and cleaning prior to your arrival.

Not included in the property – The level of spec will vary between units and you should always note down the available inventory to compare against your requirements. Popular items that holidaymakers choose to bring include power adaptors, beach towels, additional bedclothes and electronic devices for entertainment such as game consoles.

Check about pets – Holidaymakers often wish to bring their pets on this type of holiday when their preferred method of traveling is by car. In most cases, pets are not permitted due to potential damage to the property or restrictions (in the case of renting an apartment for example). As well depending on the destination you may face a possible quarantine complication. If the villa allows pets, check with Defra (The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) about the procedure of traveling with pets.

Enjoy your holiday!
