Nakuru Town has been my home town since 1999. It is one of the oldest towns in Kenya, just a few kilometers from the capital City, Nairobi. My girlfriend Eva, who had Just Moved to Nakuru from Nairobi, for some reason, never gets enough of this town. She asked me the previous day to “walk her around” Nakuru town the following Saturday that I was finishing my exams. “Honey, will you take me for a walk tomorrow?” She asked. Well, if you are a gentleman enough you understand why you should treat that more like a command than a question “for sure honey” I submitted.
So that Saturday morning after my last exam I didn’t have much trouble planning where to go for a walk. Nakuru town has a lot to offer evident in its diversity in culture, weather and spectacular tourist attraction scenes.
Three things to do in Nakuru Town
A visit to Lake Nakuru National park
Lake Nakuru national park is located about 15mins drive from Nakuru town center. This is one my long-time favourite places I visit when I want to unwind. We headed straight to Lion Hill, a very spectacular view point where we got treated to the beautiful view of the lake plus the Picturesque landscape that kept our eyes travelling. Lion Hill as we realized is a very nice vintage point for bird watching. We could clearly see the famous flamingo birds stretched across the lake shores in a way that restored mortality in the otherwise cool waters of the lake Nakuru.
A visit to Menengai crater
Well, let me first state that am afraid of heights, great heights makes things spine, or at least that is how I see it. Anyway, for the love of my girl, we took a visit the Menengai crater on Menengai Mountain just a few minutes’ walk from Lake Nakuru national park. This is one of the places you don’t want to miss if you happen to sppend a day in Nakuru. The beautiful scenic view speaks for itself.
A picnic at Sarova game lodge
What a nice way to spend a cool and calm afternoon after an adventurous day! Sarova game lodge toped the icing on the cake. Personally, as a tourism student, I was able to appreciate the rich variety of birds and the scenic landscape that offered an additional view to the Lake.
How much do things cost in Nakuru?
The cost of things in Nakuru is fairly low and the cost of living is quite bearable as well. To our surprise, we only spent Ksh. 1000 on food. This is attributed to the fact that a lot of communities around Nakuru town are farmers and therefore food is available in plenty. Park entries were similarly low as compared to Nairobi. Generally, things are cheap in Nakuru town as compared to other towns, so this means a day out in Nakuru won’t cost you that much.
My favourite Restaurant
Well, it might not be the best Restaurant in town but it is definitely my favourite. Sarova Game Lodge and Restaurant has a way of reciprocating the value of my shilling. Having our lunch at this place made our day out in Nakuru even more memorable. We were served with a variety of my favourite African dishes and well, it must have been here that the last traces of my exam stress disappeared.
